Global Small Firm Diaries
Understanding small firms is key to designing policies, financial services, and tools that help these businesses, and their workers, thrive. From 2021 to 2023, the Small Firm Diaries team collected high frequency, qualitative and quantitative data from firm owners and workers in Colombia, Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Fiji.

Current Status
In 2026, our research teams in Kenya and Colombia continue to collect data from a subset of the original sample population. This new data allows deeper analysis of areas of interest that benefit from a longer time horizon, especially related to jobs and employment as well as firm owners’ desire for stability and growth, as compared to actual growth trajectories which can be measured over a 3-year period.
